This Chinese blue and white porcelain scholar’s hat stand features a hand-painted shan shui landscape of mountains, water, pavilions, bridges and small figures. Its cylindrical form and vivid blue decoration make it a distinctive piece for a mantel, console or cabinet of Chinese porcelain.

Attributed to the early 19th-century Qing period, this piece combines a continuous landscape scene with decorative borders at the top and base. Lattice patterns and fan-shaped panels with seasonal floral motifs frame the painted scene.

Design & Background

Shan shui, meaning “mountain and water,” is a Chinese landscape tradition that invites quiet contemplation of the natural world. Here, architectural details and small figures draw the eye through the surrounding landscape.

Scholar’s hat stands were traditionally used to hold hats. This example can be displayed on its own to appreciate the landscape painting or alongside other Chinese decorative arts.
