This set of two Chinese porcelain wine and tea cups features a pair of swallows resting on a blooming cherry tree in early spring. The delicate decoration is hand-painted in the traditional famille rose, or fencai (粉彩), palette.
Cherry blossoms and swallows are auspicious motifs associated with wealth, prosperity, happiness and good fortune. Together, they evoke hope, fresh beginnings and renewal, themes often expressed in traditional Chinese painting and poetry.
The famille rose palette is distinguished by opaque overglaze enamels, soft hues and subtle gradations of colour. The finely painted details give these vessels their distinctive character, whether displayed together in a porcelain collection or admired individually.
